Coke drums are typically prematurely replaced due to repeated mechanical failures the most common of which are skirt attachment weld cracks, shell bulging and cracking, and anchor bolt failures. After over twenty years of assessing and troubleshooting these failures modes, three inventions were recently developed to address their underlying causes. In this presentation, a new skirt design, a new shell fabrication method, and a new drum anchoring system will be introduced and discussed. These inventions may be utilized for designing new drums as well as for retrofitting existing ones.
