Heater Run length is an important concern in Delayed Coker Units. There are many
variables that affect the run length of the heater. Understanding the mechanism of coke
formation is an important step in knowing the factors and practices that may be
contributing to shorter run lengths and what changes may result in longer run lengths.
This paper will discuss the mechanisms of coke formation and laydown in heater tubes as
well as the factors that accelerate and decelerate coke laydown.
