Improvements since the 1998 Equilon Puget Sound Refinery Coke Drum Incident

The power failure and tarry drum accident that occurred at the Equilon, now Shell, Puget Sound Refinery, was an awakening for the delayed coking industry. Since then, the industry and the site have made significant improvements in safety and awareness of abnormal drum situations. The presentation will revisit the events of 1998 that cost 6 people their lives and the changes that have been made to prevent this from happening again, not only at that site but around all of Shell’s delayed cokers.
