Hurricane Harvey Related Tarry Drum Incident and Recovery

Presented By

Geoff Bock - ExxonMobil Beaumont

Conference:

During Hurricane Harvey in 2017, the Beaumont refinery experienced flooding that sent the coker severely wet steam. The wet steam quenched coke drum inlet temperatures that resulted in 5 full and below temperature coke drums. What followed was a multi week recovery effort to evaluate the coke drum contents, develop an action plan to mitigate short and tarry drums, and execute that plan. The team was able to successfully open and safely de-inventory 5 of their 8 drums in various states during the shutdown. The presentation will review how the team was able to achieve this difficult task.
