Most DCU’s are configured with a single-train jet pump/electric driver for cutting the coke, which is also the setup with this refinery’s failing 3000 HP motor. Increasing vibration can be caused by many factors, and often the root of the problem can be difficult to determine. In this case, it turned out to be electrical.
This study highlights the steps taken to evaluate symptoms, analyze data and make critical production decisions with confidence, relying heavily on motor current signature analysis. It also supplies strong support for having a well-trained technical workforce performing and evaluating regular inspections of critical equipment.
