Coke Drum MAWP and Coke Bed Quenching Controls

Presented By

Mitchel Moloney - ExxonMobil Research & Engineering

Conference:

Discussed will be a probabilistic technique to evaluate and mitigate the risk of coke drum overpressure beyond ASME pressure vessel guidelines due to adding too much quench water early in the coke bed cooling process (control valve failure or manual interruption of the quench ramp), or due to encountering a great deal of hot coke rapidly during normal rate injection. It is a statistically based approach that uses commercial data to determine the probability of water-to-steam vaporization as the quench ramp progresses.
