Cargo Cults and New Applications Case Study

Presented By

Robert Dunlap - Valdes Engineering

Conference:

A confidential, trusted supplier of gas scrubbing systems used their usual design assumptions to produce a similar scrubbing system. However, the combination of project location, customer skill level and differences in gas impurities meant many weeks and thousands of dollars of rework. Cargo Cult programming is a programmer’s term for doing it the same way without questioning the assumptions. We suggest avoiding these problems by always looking for the second right answer, and by using an integrated applications engineering approach.
