The level measurement in delayed coking units is important to prevent overfilling and over foaming of a coke drum and to run the process with an optimized throughput. We will explain the physical background of nucleonic gauges to understand how effects like foaming, changes in gas properties and scaling affect the level reading and explain how to interpret and calibrate this important measurement. Limitations of the measurement principle and the devices will be discussed and we will give an insight about precautions and preventive actions to avoid or identify false readings.
After his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry Dr. Jan Sielk joined Berthold Technologies in Germany in 2011. He started as a Product Manager for radiometric / nuclear gauges and took over the Product Management and Marketing department in 2015. In his free time he enjoys traveling and playing badminton in a local team.
