Coke Drum Change Outs and a FCCU “Double Head” Off

Established in 1913, Wyatt Field Service Company is employee owned and has the longevity that our clients are looking for.  Wyatt’s reputation has been built on its work related to Fluid Catalytic Cracking Units and Coker Units. In recent years, the heavy mechanical work necessary to change out coke drums and add DeltaValves has been one of Wyatt’s fortes. Wyatt’s Engineering Department, led by Mike Norton (VP of Engineering), has been responsible for the engineering of some of the heaviest lifts on record.

In the spring of 2011, Wyatt had the capital and maintenance work on the Valero Port Arthur Refinery, which consisted of lifting six (6) drill towers weighing 1,539 tons in a single pick.  This was done with a specialized lifting crane and once accomplished, the six (6) existing drums were changed out with new ones. It is worth noting that the new drums were larger in diameter, therefore modifications were required of the structure and piping.  Working over 250,000 man-hours (both capital and maintenance), the project was successfully completed as planned with zero recordables.  This project equaled the daily work of approximately 450 direct and indirect Wyatt employees.  The Engineering Department alone worked numerous hours coming up with the boom length of 426 feet and the lift radius of 177 feet.  Designed by Wyatt’s engineering department and constructed by their workers, a temporary foundation on which to land the six (6) drill towers during the drums change out was also completed successfully.  The project was delivered to the client within budget and ahead of schedule.

Wyatt also recently completed an interesting FCCU job in a CA refinery consisting of a “double head” off. These projects are frequent for the Wyatt team and not normally unique, but the CA project is worth noting – challenging because of the months and months of engineering and planning due to the state’s requirements. Contractors who have done work in CA will understand the various and numerous steps you must go through during the planning and scheduling of such a project.

The teamwork around these two projects is a great example of what makes Wyatt a special company. Wyatt is proud to be one of the original exhibitors of the Coking.com Conferences and looks forward to exhibiting at RefComm Galveston 2016. Look for our team in booth # 49.
