As anyone with heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) unit experience knows, not all Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Ammonia Injection Grid (AIG) jobs are created equal when it comes to reducing refinery NOx emissions. There are many variables involved in producing the highest yield while running as efficiently as possible. Groome Industrial Service Group encountered this challenge back in 2018, when the company was hired to perform work at a facility that produces more than 300,000 barrels a day. At this particular facility, space was at a premium for the SCR, and the AIG required a redesign for superior dispersion. A better system design of the AIG would allow for ideal reaction pre-catalyst.
Groome met the spacing challenge head-on by designing a pleated wedge SCR catalyst. This allowed for greater catalytic potential while achieving pressure drop. The flexibility of this system allowed the facility to achieve their production goals while accommodating the space restrictions. The existing AIG lances in the unit were round tube. In order to achieve greater dispersion upstream of the SCR, Groome installed a square tube lance to replace the round tubes. Injection nozzles were placed on the angle apex facing directly upstream.
This inventive design and placement of the catalyst system has already proven to promote better dispersion and system efficiency at this particular facility, and Groome continues to monitor this job to further quantify the efficiencies gained from the worked performed.
For more than 35 years, Groome Industrial Service Group has provided a wide scope of services to the power generation and refinery industry, with expertise in SCR & CO Catalyst Cleaning/Repacking/Replacement, AIG cleaning, Boiler Tube Blasting and much more. Groome will be exhibiting at RefComm® Galveston 2019 and they are looking forward to connecting with end users and industry peers alike throughout the event. Stop by Booth 24 to meet with Steve Houghton, National Sales Manager and Ray Langton, Refinery Sales Specialist, to discuss any work you may need completed at your facility.
