The ability to clean or inspect the valve without removing it from the piping is good, compared to ball valves, that would require removal for disassembly. Additional clearance would be required between the deck and the bottom of the valve, so this cleaning can be done. Anybody out there using these valves ?

Drill stems provided by Flowserve on recent projects have a swaged end that has a larger outside diameter on the female threaded end, compared to older designs. This improves the integrity of the threaded joint.

I agree that you need to inspect & maintain your drill stem regularly. Use the proper lube and tools when tightening the joints, and don’t ram the coke bed.

Foster Wheeler has a top unheading device that will allow the operator to remotely open the top head. (away from the drum).

A purge steam pressure gage near each switch valve is useful, so the operator can check it before switching.

Restriction orifice size is also important, so that you have enough purge rate.

Also, if you have steam traps in this piping, they should be in working order.

Cutting tools can also plug with rubber particles from the inside wall of a damaged decoking water hose.

The same rubber sway breaker design was installed at the Petrozuata Upgrader in Venezuela and the guys there tell me it works great.
