Another alternative is the semi-automatic device manufactured by Foster Wheeler.
See slide # 46 of 59 of the presentation in the link below:

AnonymousThis FW option does not offer the same safety features as a sliding valve.

The addition of a FW TUD in older cokers will:
1.- Improve the ergonomic position when removing the top head bolts.
2.- Eliminate a trip hazard, as sometimes the top flange is less than a foot above the top deck.
3.- Allow the operator to remotely open the top head (after removing the bolts).
4.- Additional drill stem guide & cover with automatic locking device can be incorporated to keep the cutting tool inside the drum.
Anything that can be done to keep the operators away while doing these activities will improve safety.
Regards,
CG

AnonymousWhat ever happen with the proposed design by Velan on a sliding valve with semi-circular motion? This concept was presented a few years ago.

I have seen both Delta Valve and Z*J Valve. My preference is with the Z*JH, It offers a true douyble gate valve that can be worked on in place. The hydraulics for the Z*J is supplied by Blac inc out of Chicago

AnonymousWhat does it take to install and/or remove such a huge enormous valve, are special rigging devices requiered. During new construction is it convinient to install the bottom valve prior drum installation.
