We are beginning construction of a new Hydrocracker, CCR and Hydrogen Plant. I am requesting information on how other refiners staff these units.
Our current plan is to supply five employees per shift to manage this facility, that’s one Board Operator with four Outside Operators per shift. I’m concerned that this is not an adequate number.

Good luck with that one. Two years ago we started up a Hydrocracker and H2 plant. These units were combined with two other three man units. The cat cracker and gas plants and treating units. All were combined in a new control room with three board men and two outside operators allotted to each of the three units. A lot of cross training between the three units was done. The problems have come about in trying to come up with a workable line of progression. Countless hours of meetings between management, unit personel and the union have failed to achieve a workable plan. One problem is that all the seniority lies on the gas plant side and very little on the cat side. it is an ongoing nightmare for our plant and one that shows no signs of going away anytime soon. signed, Chris from McPherson
