I am a safety engineer, I work at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
I am doing a risk analysis of a pier in Brazil, and one of the materials that they receive in the pier is coke.
I was looking for the properties of this material, and I could find only coke oven emissions.
Please, I would like to ask you the dangerous properties of coke.
    Gisele Sandres.

The nuisance dust exposure values are listed but they apply to any inert substance capable ofproducing airborne particulates. Excessive concentrations of nuisance dusts may reduce visibility, cause unpleasant deposits in theeye, ears, and nasal passages, or irritate the skin or mucous membranes by mechanical means. However, normal workplaceexposure has not been determined to cause a significant health effect. The material, as with many petroleum products, may causeminor skin, eye, or lung irritation, but good hygienic practices can minimize these effects. Is product listed as Carcinogen or Potential Carcinogen by: NTP? No IARC? No OSHA? NoRECOMMENDED FIRST AID TREATMENTInhalation: Remove to fresh air. If breathing has stopped, administer artificial respiration and supply oxygen. If problems persist, seek medical attention.Eye Contact: In case of contact, immediately flush eyes with plenty of water until irritation subsides. If irritation persists, seekmedical attention.Skin Contact: Normal skin contact is not known to cause a significant health effect. Particles should be periodically washed off ofskin with soap and water.Ingestion: If swallowed, do not induce vomiting. Immediately give water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconsciousperson. May burn if exposed to temperatures above 700 oF (370 oC).EXTINGUISHING MEDIAWater Fog, Dry Chemical, Foam, or Carbon DioxideSPECIAL FIRE FIGHTING PROCEDURE: Most reported coke fires have occurred when freshly produced coke isinadequately cooled and stored in a manner that allows the movement of air through the coke bed. Coke should be well quenchedor cooled before it is stored in a pile out of doors or placed in silos or bins. Storage should be arranged to prevent movement of airthrough the coke. Should a fire occur, its locations and extent should be determined as quickly as possible. The best procedure isto dig out and remove the coke in the heated zone. The hot coke should be drenched with water as it is exposed. Because of thepossibility of steam explosion, great care should be used introducing water into confined storage such as a silo. Wheneverpossible, bulk material in silos should be removed and material drenched in an open area. Products of combustion may containcarbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide. Do not enter permitted confined space or enclosed area without proper PPE.There is no dust explosion hazard from Green Petroleum Coke.FLASH POINT (MINIMUM) AUTO IGNITION TEMPERATURE FLAMMABLE LIMITS % BY VOLUMENo Data Available See Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards LEL UELSection below No Data Available No Data AvailableMSDS Green Petroleum CokeSECTION VI SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURESSTEPS TO BE TAKEN IN CASE MATERIAL IS RELEASEDMaterial is not toxic and can be picked up by sweeping, shoveling, or vacuuming. Provisions should be made to prevent washing, draining, or directing material to storm or sanitary sewers.WASTE DISPOSAL METHODAll Federal, State, and Local regulations regarding health and pollution must be followed for disposal of green petroleum coke.RESPIRATORY PROTECTION (Specify type)Select appropriate NIOSH-approved protection where necessary to maintain exposures below the acceptable limits in the HealthHazard Section. Proper respiratory selection should be determined by adequately trained personnel and based on thecontaminant(s), the degree of potential exposure and published respirator protection factors.VENTILATIONDust should be controlled at point of operation.PROTECTIVE GLOVESNone required.EYE PROTECTIONNone required. Recommend using dust goggles in areas of high dust concentrations.OTHER PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENTUse sufficient protective clothing to minimize skin exposure. Launder contaminated clothing before reuse.SECTION VIII ADDITIONAL HEALTH DATAGreen petroleum coke was found to be non-carcinogenic in mice in chronic skin painting studies with coke dust. Green petroleumcoke was found not to be carcinogenic in monkeys and rats in a two-year inhalation study at concentrations up to 30 mg/m417418.Chronic inflammatory changes similar to those produced by non-specific respiratory irritants were observed in some rats at thehighest exposure level.Green petroleum coke (delayed process and fluid process) was found not to be mutagenic in a rat in vivo Bone MarrowCytogenetic test, a mouse Lymphoma assay and an Ames Mutagenicity assay.SECTION IX SHIPPING INFORMATIONDEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORATION (DOT)Proper Shipping Name : Regulated by water mode only, Petroleum coke, uncalcinedHazard Class : ORM ( other regulated material ) CDot Label(s) : NoneDOT Placard : NoneINTERNATIONAL MARITIME ORGANIZATION (IMO)Proper Shipping Name : Petroleum coke, uncalcined.
