Delaware approves permit for second nitrogen oxide scrubber at Delaware City Valero refinery
DELAWARE CITY, Del. (AP) — Delaware’s environmental department has approved a permit for a second scrubber at the Valero Energy Corp. refinery in Delaware City to reduce nitrogen oxide air emissions.
Premcor Refining Group, whose parent is San Antonio-based Valero, sought the permit from the state because it is going to increase its wastewater discharge of nitrates by 33 tons.
State Environmental Secretary John Hughes approved the permit allowing the company to install a second wet gas scrubber to cut nitrogen oxide air emissions by more than 500 tons annually.
Valero was required to apply for a Coastal Zone Act permit because the system designed to reduce air pollution at its Delaware City refinery will create water pollution.
The refinery is the 17th largest source of nitrate pollution nationally.
