AnonymousI would like to know about the economics of decoking by pigging vs steam air decoking.
The skin of pigged tubes is more than that of steam air decoked tubes. How can this phenomenon be explained because pigging is the best way of cleaning.
Thanks & regards

AnonymousDan:
I have been pigging heaters for over 13 years. When were the skin temps monitored? Was it at start up or into the run cycle?

AnonymousWith being three month into a run cycle there can be a number of reasons the skin temps are high. It is difficult to know what is going on with out history from start up.

AnonymousSteam air decoking will clean the tubes better than spalling or pigging but steam air decoking is much more difficult and takes more time. Furthermore, some sites have environmental issues with steam air decoking. Lastly if you have significant solids in the feed , you must pig. The solid fall ot in the upper radiant section or lower convection section of the heater. Spalling and steam air decoking are not effective method with high solid feeds. Normally, I recommend spalling on a regular basis with periodic pigging and pigging on an opportunity basis.
