2008-04-01 12:21 (New York) By Robert Tuttle
April 1, 2008 (Bloomberg) — The U.S. Coast Guard said it has
closed a section of the Mississippi river near Vicksburg,
Mississippi, after a barge collided with a bridge and sank.
The section of the river between mile marker 422 and 440
was shut at 12:30 a.m. local time, the Coast Guard said in a
release today. The barge, which was carrying steel coil, struck
the Vicksburg Highway 80 Bridge.
“The Coast Guard is working with the Army Corps of
Engineers to find the exact position of the sunken barge so the
river can be reopened to commercial traffic,” the Coast Guard
said.
