Fire Shuts Coker at Imperials Sarnia Refinery, Observer Says

By Brett Foley and Guy Collins
Feb. 14, 2009 (Bloomberg) — Imperial Oil Ltd. shut the coker unit at its Sarnia, Ontario refinery after a fire, the Sarnia-based Observer newspaper reported.
The blaze, which it said began at 3:15 p.m. yesterday local time, was small and quickly contained while producing massive clouds of grey and white smoke. The all-clear was given three hours later and no injuries were reported. The refinery can process 119,000 barrels of crude oil a day, according to the companys Web site. XOM Sarnia has a Fluid Coker.  Cause was Hydraulic Oil leak from a slide valve actuator igniting on hot steel.  Fire was minor, though localized damage occurred. Based on early reports, cyclones and dip legs are clear following rough shutdown.  SU steps in progress.   MJ Moloney
