BEST PRACTICES
– Quench Cycles/Hot Spots
Totalizers for quench water and sour water
– Furnace Issues
Burner cleaning/maintenance
PM programs
Operations Flexibility
Spalling
Velocity Steam
Heater Inlet PI is a good indicator
Charts with valve position and flow rates
START UP
– Make sure the system is dry
– Air Free
– Take it slow
– Start antifoam right away
– Start on minute rate
– Down fill 1[sup]st[/sup] drum all the way
– Test Interlocks
– Make sure all electrical equipment is on
– Test deluge
SWITCH VALVES
– System purge is important
Lack of steam purge can cause reliability issues with valves
N2 for back up purge
HCGO Properties
– Increasing recycle with lower C.R
– Quench Oil
Time/Temp
HCGO/ LCGO/ Slop
Need enough to keep O.H lines wet to prevent fouling
– Wash Section – too much pressure can make wash nozzles not work.
ANTIFOAM
600,000 cc
– Some have antifoam on level control
– Carrier
LCGO/HCGO
Ratio Controller
– Injection Points
Top is best
– Foamovers
Good level indication
VELOCITY STEAM (Best Practices)
– Looking at heater inlet PIs for steam rates
– Charts with valve position and flow rates
– If flow meters work use them
LOTO FOR CONTRACT CUTTING
Lock out before it’s handed over to contractors. Contractors apply locks too.
FURNACE ISSUES (Best Practices)
– Rate of rise on skin Tis.
– Burner Cleaning- Quarterly inspection/ cleaning
– Spalling
- Some use steam without shocking
- Some use BFW. Could contain chemicals though
- Spall as much as possible until you have to come down
QUENCH CYCLES/ HOTSPOTS (Best Practices)
– How much sour water make
– Totalizer for water
– ½ hour soak helps
– Back pressure on drums to mitigate hot spots
– Drain and re-quench if you have a hot drum
SLURRY FEED (FCC)
– Put to quench, can cause problems- Coke fines plugging filters
- Decant coming in cold
– Best Practice – Bring in with Feed.
