What kind of problems are you having and what kind of refractory are you using? Are you disintegrating your refractory or melting it? High silica (>20%) refractories in ammonia reformers in the 1970s experienced a lot of refractory problems and downstream boiler fouling due to hydrogen leaching silica from the refractory. Their solution was to use low silica brick.
