The refractory lining is to prevent condensation of the hot vapors coming up the column on the cold tray. This is to increase the recovery of distillates. A lot of refineries have removed this lining as they are not able to get the towers hydrocarbon free during turnarounds as liquid stays under the cracked refractory.
