The Three Most Common Failure Modes in Coke Drums and What to Do About Them

Presented By

Dr. Mahmod Samman - Houston Engineering Solutions

Conference:

It is common for coke drums to experience various types of damage mechanisms during their life time. Some drums have experienced through-wall cracks and excessive bulging after less than three years in service. These failures which are rare in other pressure vessels are caused by exceptionally severe thermo-mechanical loads to which drums are exposed during normal operation. In this presentation, we review the most common failure modes and discuss measures that can be implemented to assess and mitigate them.
