MPC Coker Structure Piping Failures

Presented By

Jason Pennington - Marathon Petroleum

Conference:

piping failuresCyclic service on piping around the coke drum is a well known problem. Piping attached to the overhead of the coke drum must be designed with proper flexibility and welding. Careful design and routine inspection apply to large piping while small bore piping should not be overlooked. The presentation explores a number of failures that occurred at 2 different cokers over a period of years at the PSV purge steam piping connections. A key take-away is that every DCU should check their design and routinely inspect the purge connections for evidence of fatigue cracking.
